How to Make Thrifted Sweaters and Dresses Look FABULOUS
The secret: A CUTE BELT!
First of all, I am no fashionista, by any means. But I’m learning (slowly but surely) that a belt dresses up any look almost instantly. What looks plain and frumpy from the thrift store is TOTALLY transformed with a belt to cinch in your waist and to accentuate your curves!
This past Columbus Day holiday, you know my favorite thrift store had 50% off (and to think I ALMOST forgot about the sale!). I lugged home 2 huge bags of sweaters (and a couple dresses), and I felt like a kid in the freakin’ candy store! But the looks were a little “ho-hum” without a belt to polish off the look. So I found one of my belts and tried it on with every piece of clothing I had bought, and –man!–I felt wonderful! And pretty! When’s the last time you felt like you looked your best?
And that felt amazing, considering that almost a year ago, my butt was carrying at LEAST 40 extra pounds while I grew a baby.
Finally, I am feeling back to “normal” and I’m ready to start enjoying my pre-pregnancy body again. (Thank you, Weight Watchers!)
So here’s my little fashion shoot down in my basement tonight, while hubby make inappropriate jeers at me while he snapped away on my iPhone. HAHAHAHA!
- This cute shirt, although it’s supposed to be roomy, needs structure. Love the pockets!
- I love this look with a belt! I can’t wait to wear it! Jeans: White House Black Market
- Woven belts look great with everything!
- Frumpy Franny without a belt
- Polyester IS cool!
- A little bit up top, but nothing a little sewing can’t fit.
- Chunky sweaters need something to break up the “chunky”
- I love how comfortable I feel in this sweater.
- Oh my, this sweater is cozy (but boring!)
- So this definitely is not the appropriate COLOR of belt, but you get the idea. A nice RED belt would be very chic!
- Only $5.00 at an outside flea market.
- This shirt was inspired by a look at WHBM, for fraction of the cost.
- I feel a bit glamorous in this shirt!
- Looking great doesn’t have to be financial suicide.
- This will look PERFECT in Hawaii in Dec ’12!
- Yes, please!
- I’m ready for Fall!
And since I promised hubby that I would NOT buy another piece of thrift store, buying clothing today was FAIR GAME.
And boy did I rack up!! Everything was no more than $3.00 each (mostly $2.50!!!!!)
I’m happy. Now maybe I can’t stop wearing the same ‘ole stuff to work everyday. WHEW!
So what do you all think?? Do you like the belt with these pieces?

I love your post. I am sorry you were not able to take all three. Maybe next time. Do you sell a lot of your pieces?
Thanks, Georgetta! I have not yet begun to sell things, but I’m moving in that direction!
Thanks for your comment!
Way to work it, Serena! You’re so right, creating a waist goes a long way in putting a look together. It’s all about accessories this season. I CANNOT believe you scored these items at a thrift store. I’d tell your husband how lucky he is to have a thrift shopping babe! You made me laugh when you said he was making crude comments to you while taking the pictures!:) Oh, by the way, you look fabulous. Congrats on losing all that weight. I LOVE Weight Watchers!!
Hey, girl! So good to see your comment! It’s a great compliment, because you are definitely one fashionable woman! Yeah, hard to believe I found all that stuff in ONE trip. And the fact that everything was so cheap! And the weight it slooooowly coming off, but I’m determined. MUST.GET.IN.SHAPE before Hawaii in less than 2 months!
